Friends Publishing Corporation (FPC), the publisher of Friends Journal, seeks an Editor to join our team starting in June 2011. Reporting to the executive director, you will have lead responsibility for all published content. In collaboration with our editorial and design team, you will correspond with authors and select manuscripts for publication; oversee the editing of content for the magazine, website and books; create the annual production schedule; solicit, read and respond to submissions; and supervise editorial freelancers, volunteers, and student interns. You will work with writers to create dynamic and engaging copy and will identify and cultivate writers who are at the forefront of Quaker thought and life today.
Experience and knowledge of Friends is essential. The ideal candidate will be pleased to work with the wide range of belief found among Friends across all branches of Quakerism. As we move to integrate electronic-media publishing into the core of our work, we seek the talents of one who is deeply familiar with the Quaker online ecosystem (institutions, traditional media, blogs, and social media sites), attuned to the issues and dynamics of online publishing, and excited to build and engage Friends Publishing Corporation’s audience creatively across all media. The successful candidate will bring to our team and mission:
- A deep understanding of and interest in Quakerism and issues facing the Religious Society of Friends.
- Demonstrated experience in editing articles for a non-technical audience with an eye toward clarity, engagement, and readability.
- Excellent communications skills and the ability to work with authors and potential authors in improving their craft in the interest of FPC's audience.
- The desire to help transform FPC into a comprehensive communications ministry, with attention to audience growth and engagement across multiple media including print, online, social media, and mobile.
- Skill and interest in using technological solutions to drive efficiency and effectiveness in editorial processes and workflows.
- A track record of success in meeting strict, relentless deadlines while operating with precision and creativity.
- The ability to work effectively and respectfully with a small team of colleagues towards shared goals.
We offer a warm, congenial work environment in the heart of Center City Philadelphia. An excellent benefits package includes generous paid vacation, medical, dental, FSA and disability insurance; flexible work hours; and the excitement of working in a hub of Quaker communication. This is a full-time, exempt position.
Qualified persons may submit a letter of application, résumé, and relevant supporting documents including contact information for three references to: Gabriel Ehri, Executive Director Designate, in plain text, .doc, and/or .pdf format via email at personnel@friendsjournal.org. Review of applications will begin April 1, 2011. No paper applications, faxes, or phone calls, please.
