Wanted: Editor-Writer for Grant-Funded Project

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. The USC Annenberg Knight Chair seeks an experienced editor for Religion Dispatches’ “Remapping American Christianities” initiative—a new project in online journalism with a commitment to investigating and analyzing the rapidly changing Christian landscape. The ideal candidate will have experience in online media, a background in journalism with a focus on new digital storytelling strategies, and a deep interest in the goals of this initiative.

The position will work along with RD’s publisher and co-editors-in-chief to acquire content, edit material for publication, and publish to the site. The editor will also assist with the planning and programming for yearly convenings, and will work closely with the academic advisory board to the project. The editor will meet with writers and support staff and oversee contractors, as needed. The editor will researches and identify new contributors and areas of coverage. Work closely with writers in the process of preparing material for publication. Occasional writing, blogging, interviewing for the site. Monitors social engagement, site commenting system; maintains mailing list. Correspond with and maintains relationships with book publishers in relevant areas. Interfaces with editorial staff and publisher. Stay informed of developments in field. Read pertinent literature, attends meetings and participates in professional associations as appropriate. Establish and maintains an active network of professional contacts. Coordinates program services with other offices and staff on campus. Serve as a resource for program information. Provide leadership, guidance and supervision to staff, student workers, volunteers, and/or graduate assistants. Report to the Religion Dispatches Advisory Group on the status of the initiative. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

American religion, journalism, and some academic background a plus. Experience with WordPress CMS a plus.

This is a 3 year grant-funded position located in Los Angeles. This position is up for renewal, annually, based on funding and the needs of the program.
